What is eduroam?
Eduroam (Education Roaming) is a global Wi-Fi service that provides students, researchers, and staff from participating institutions with secure and seamless internet connectivity. By simply using their home institution credentials (in email format), users can access Wi-Fi networks at their own campus or while visiting any other eduroam-enabled institution worldwide—without the need for separate guest accounts or additional logins.
In Zimbabwe, the Zimbabwe Research and Education Network (ZIMREN) is expanding the availability of eduroam to enhance collaboration and mobility across its member institutions. The service is powered by a federated authentication system:
Home institution – verifies the user’s credentials
Visited institution – provides network access in line with its local policies
How it works
User connects to the Wi-Fi network labeled eduroam
User enters login using their institutional email and password
Home institution’s authentication server verifies credentials
The visited institution grants network access based on its policies
Benefits to Users & Institutions
For Users:
Hassle-free connectivity at all member institutions
A uniform access experience globally
Reduced need for support from multiple login systems
For Institutions:
Leveraging shared resources to boost collaboration and research mobility
Lower IT support overhead with standardized access procedures
Strengthened trust within the broader education network
